A high-visibility building
David Chipperfield Architects are the masters of minimalism. They have created an architectural icon with such an elegant design that it will shine out well beyond the city’s borders.
It all began with a sketch. David Chipperfield Architects always envisioned the HafenCity skyline with the Elbtower as a holistic whole.
David Chipperfield Architects on the Elbtower

“AT ITS BEST, ARCHITECTURE CONTRIBUTES TO THE WAY WE LIVE AND TO THE QUALITY OF OUR DAILY LIVES.”

Art inspired by nature
Studio Other Spaces, founded by artist Ólafur Elíasson and Sebastian Behmann, are designing the Elbtower’s façade as a sculpture of light. Sensors pick up tiny changes in the weather conditions and then translate them into subtle lighting effects. At night, these turn the building into a vibrant work of art.
“The light sculpture by Studio Other Spaces visualises this resonance principle and translates phenomena we can sense but not always see into a play of light and movement.”
